Buzzing with Life – Modifying your Vibrational Energy

Last year I wrote an article all about how our energy behaves in Winter, covering how to counteract the tendency of Chi to slow down and withdraw within us and how grounding ourselves during meditation might not be a good idea if we’re already feeling a little flat at this time of year. If you haven’t read that article I do encourage you to do so (Chi in Winter).

This year I’m going to look at a more proactive approach to Chi in Winter. What do we do if we want to speed things up a bit for ourselves and stimulate our Chi flow? To answer this question we need to look at vibrational energy.

Chi is vibrational energy but it isn’t the only vibration around us. When you dig deeper you find vibrations within vibrations, cycles within cycles. Then when you step back you see the larger vibrational cycles, the days, months, seasons, orbits and so on. So how do we use this to change our own energy? To make gentle large scale changes in energy flow there are generally two components – connecting the internal vibration (our own personal “frequency”) and then applying the external vibration that is the tool we use for modification.

Before this all starts sounding too esoteric and you think I’ve been spending too much time with the happy mushroom over Christmas, I’ll ground this for you in something many of us are familiar with: Chi Kung.

When we start our Chi Kung practice, opening our minds to the exercise, we are connecting to our own internal vibration. Then we apply the external vibration that is the movements and breathing etc. involved in that exercise. Given enough repetition, the two together build up the resonance in our body to change, strengthen and heal our system. We connect with the internal and then use this connection to mould ourselves with the external, like needing to get a good grip on a big rock before we can move it.

If you don’t make the connection to the internal vibration, the external vibration is unlikely to give the gains you might expect – I wouldn’t recommend doing Chi Kung whilst watching television for instance.

These cycles and vibrations do not have to be physical, what is important is merely that they register within our awareness somehow. Probably the most obvious vibration around us is sound and the purest form of that is music. Most people have listened to a piece of music and enjoyed it at one time or another, but the potential of music goes far deeper and works on far more levels than that of “just” a nice tune (though the power of that itself should not be underestimated).

The way to use this piece is as follows:

  1. Find a quiet place where you can be undisturbed and listen to the piece
  2. Perform the Grounding exercise (Grounding)
  3. Get into a comfortable meditative position, it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting or standing as long as you’re comfortable. Lying down works too but can be problematic as people tend to fall asleep!
  4. Start the piece playing and close your eyes
  5. Assert in your mind that you will allow the music to change your energy for your greatest good
  6. Bring your attention to the music so it is the only thing in your awareness
  7. Let the music flow over you – try not to think about the patterns in it as you might when listening to a track on the radio, rather let it lead you with an empty mind as you would in a meditation (actually that is exactly what this is)
  8. When the piece ends assert in your mind that the meditation is complete and any changes to your energy should now complete also
  9. Perform the Grounding exercise once again

Connecting yourself to the music (step 6) and the empty mind whilst listening (step 7) are very important because it is these that connect you to the patterns in the music at an energetic level and allow the meditative structures within the music to take effect. Without these steps you’re just listening to music.
